Contrail shadow at dusk

The blue band is a shadow, not a cloud: cast by a jet's contrail low on the horizon, back-lit by the last of the sun and projecting across the sky the same way a cloud's shadow does at ground level near sunset.

It needs a very particular geometry, the sun close to the horizon and the contrail positioned to catch it edge-on. A few minutes either way and the effect is gone. The moon sits above it, already well up before the sky has properly finished the day.

Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
