Cloud on the ridge
New Hampshire · 12 October 2019

Mid-October in the White Mountains, with the cloud base sitting just below the summit. The pale scars running across the slope are old slides - granite stripped bare where the thin soil let go and took the trees with it. They are how a lot of the rock here ever gets seen at all.
The colour runs from red at the bottom of the frame to green at the top, and that gradient is elevation. Cold arrives at the ridge first and works downwards, so a single hillside can hold three weeks of autumn at once.
Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
