A female cheetah with cubs on a kill in the Mara, the ridged horn lying in the grass most of what is left of it. Cheetahs hunt the open grassland by day, when the lions are asleep, and the Mara's short-grass plains are as good as their country gets.
They eat fast and nervously, and this is why: they cannot defend a carcass against anything. Lions, hyenas and eventually vultures will all take it, and a cheetah that fights risks the injury that finishes it. Something close to half of all cheetah kills are lost to something bigger. The black lines from eye to mouth are thought to cut glare, on the same principle as the grease American footballers wear.
