Café under the pines
Lisbon · 1 July 2024

The esplanade inside Castelo de São Jorge, red café chairs set out under umbrella pines against the castle's own stone.
The ruins behind the tables are Islamic-period and older, excavated rather than reconstructed, sitting inside walls that were themselves rebuilt more than once after earthquakes and sieges took their turns at them. The pines are the tree of Lisbon, and the nuts in the pastries are theirs.
Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
