Bringing coconuts in by donkey
Lamu · 18 February 2024

Dhows at anchor off the waterfront, mangroves behind them, and a donkey coming up the beach under a sack of coconuts, its rider steering by voice and stick rather than rein. Coconuts, mangrove poles and donkeys are the old economy of the archipelago in one frame: the poles went to Arabia by dhow for centuries as building timber, and the same monsoon winds that carried them still set the sailing season.
Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
