A Blue Wildebeest in the Masai Mara with rain coming in and the grass already long. February is the short green season here, months before the migration arrives from the Serengeti, and this one is a resident: a proportion of the population never leaves the Mara at all. Wildebeest are grazers of the short-grass plains of East and Southern Africa, and they spend most of their lives with their heads down.
They are the engine of the great migration, something like a million and a quarter of them moving in a rough circle between Tanzania and Kenya, following the rain. The front-heavy build is not accidental; it is a machine for eating grass.
