Red at the base of each petal shading to yellow at the tip, around a dark, bristled disc. A prairie native from the middle of the continent, and about as undemanding as a border plant gets: it wants poor soil, full sun and to be left alone, and it flowers from June to the first frost on nothing.
The name is older than the garden plant. It was blanket flower before anyone bred it, for the resemblance to the woven blankets of the Plains nations, and the story that it grows on the graves of good weavers is a settlers' tale that stuck.
