A breeding male Blackpoll Warbler in Prospect Park in late May, one of the last warblers through each spring and bound for the spruce forests of Canada and Alaska. It is the long-distance champion of the family.
The bright orange-yellow legs are the field mark that separates it from the similar Black-and-white Warbler, which shares the black cap and streaks but has dark legs. "Poll" is an old word for the top of the head. In autumn, Blackpolls leaving the north-eastern coast fly out over open ocean for roughly three days straight, landing in South America having covered close to two and a half thousand miles without a stop.
