Beech holding its leaves later than almost anything else in an English wood, and longest of all on saplings and low branches that never get enough light to shed on the usual schedule. The trait is called marcescence, and it is the same reason a garden beech hedge stays clothed in brown right through winter.
The ivy climbing every trunk does the trees no particular harm. It roots in the ground and draws nothing from what it is climbing.
