Barred Owl

Barred Owl · Central Park · 28 November 2020

A Barred Owl in Central Park in November, a woodland owl of the eastern and northern forests that has done conspicuously well out of cities. This one wintered in the park in 2020 and became something close to a local celebrity, drawing a standing crowd for months.
Dark eyes, which among North American owls is unusual; most look back at you with yellow. Only this bird and the Barn Owl have eyes that read as black. The call gives them away long before the bird does: eight hoots in two groups, rendered in every field guide as who cooks for you, who cooks for you all.
Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
