Balconies off an alley, Lamu
Lamu · 17 February 2024

Coral rag below, lime-washed plaster above, and a first-floor baraza of carved balusters with striped curtains pulled against the sun - the layering that gives Lamu's old town its texture, all of it visible at once from the bottom of one narrow alley. Makuti thatch and rusting tin share the roofline a few feet further back.
The town has been a Swahili trading settlement for the better part of a thousand years, and UNESCO listed it in 2001 as the oldest and best-preserved of them.
Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
