Arctic Fox, stalking low
Vulpes lagopus
Arctic Fox · Iceland · 27 December 2023

An Arctic Fox with its body dropped low, moving straight toward the camera across the snow in southern Iceland, the low winter sun turning the snow around it pale blue. This is a fox of the open tundra and snowfield, hunting alone in the coldest months.
Arctic foxes hunt largely by sound in snow like this, pinpointing anything moving under the surface before ever seeing it, and then pouncing straight down through the crust. A stalking posture like this one is as much about listening as looking.
Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
