An Arctic Fox stopped, turned, and entirely unbothered on the snow in southern Iceland - which is common here, where they have been protected in some areas for decades and were never hunted by anything on four legs. It is an animal of the whole Arctic, and Iceland is the southern edge of its world.
The proportions are the adaptation. Short muzzle, short legs, small round ears, compact body: every projection is reduced, because anything that sticks out loses heat. Compare a red fox, built long and lean for a warmer climate, and the difference is obvious.
