An Arctic Fox looking over a drift on the south coast of Iceland in December, and only visible because of the eyes and nose. Arctic foxes live right round the top of the world, on the tundra and sea ice, and Iceland's are the country's only native land mammal, walking in over the ice at the end of the last glaciation.
This is the problem with photographing them in winter: a white fox on old snow is genuinely hard to see even when you know exactly where it is. The camouflage works just as well against the things that hunt it - which in Iceland means nothing at all, since there are no native land predators. It evolved the coat somewhere else.
