Arctic Fox below the ridge
Vulpes lagopus
Arctic Fox · Iceland · 27 December 2023

An Arctic Fox paused on a snow slope in the south of Iceland with a sunlit peak filling the background. Iceland's arctic foxes are the country's only native land mammal, there since the last ice age, and the interior snowfields are where the white ones live.
The white winter coat is the less common of the island's two colour forms. Most Icelandic foxes are the dark "blue" morph, which stays brown year-round and dominates on the coast, where a white coat is no use against black sand and rock. A white fox is a fox of the interior.
Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
