An Arctic Fox on the move across the snow in southern Iceland, nose down, which is how you almost always see them. They live on the coast and the tundra right round the Arctic, and in Iceland they are the only land mammal that arrived on its own.
Iceland has no native rodents, which matters enormously. Everywhere else in its range the arctic fox lives on a boom-and-bust cycle driven by lemmings; here it never had that option and became a generalist instead. Coastal foxes work the strandline for whatever the sea leaves - carrion, seabirds, eggs, washed-up fish - and inland ones take ptarmigan and geese. They cache heavily in autumn against a winter that offers nothing.
