Five-petalled white flowers opening from crimson buds still tight further up the branch - almost certainly one of the flowering apricots or plums, Prunus mume or a close relative.
They open in this part of the world before the leaves do and well ahead of the cherries they are often mistaken for. In Japan the mume is the flower of the very end of winter, blooming in the snow, and it was the blossom of poetry for centuries before the cherry took over.
