A robin working the bare, thawed ground at the edge of the snow rather than the snow itself. Robins are all over North America, from Alaska to Mexico, and plenty stay in New York through the winter, switching from earthworms to fruit and berries once the ground freezes.
The idea that robins are a first sign of spring is mostly folklore in the Northeast. They were here all along, in flocks in the treetops, and simply become visible again once bare soil like this reappears and the worms come up.
