Buttressed bases lined up close enough to read as a single mass rather than individual trees, each one flaring out where it meets the water.
The flare is the bald cypress answer to standing in a swamp for a lifetime: a wide, fluted foot that spreads the load in soft mud and holds the tree up through hurricanes. Some of the trees on this creek are over a thousand years old, among the oldest in the eastern United States.
