A samurai residence, Kakunodate

Kakunodate's Bukeyashiki district, a street of preserved samurai residences dating to the early 1600s, when the town was laid out as a planned castle town under the Ashina and then Satake clans.
Black board fencing and weathered plaster are the standard here rather than anything grand. These were the houses of the retainer class, not the lords. The maples along the street were brought from Kyoto by a later Satake bride, the same trees whose autumn colour now draws people back every October.
