A rock ledge over the valley

A slab of pale conglomerate overhanging its own rockfall, full autumn colour running out across the forest below to a hazy ridgeline.
Country like this - white bedrock capping oak and pitch-pine scrub - is typical of the Shawangunk Ridge rather than the Catskill or Adirondack look most people picture for "Upstate". The pitch pine is the tree to know: it survives fire by sprouting new needles straight out of the trunk, which almost no other pine can do.
