A lone butte at dusk

A single butte catching the day's last direct light while everything around it has already dropped into shadow, a juniper twisted low against the wind in the foreground. A butte is a mesa that has run out of top - the same flat-lying rock, eroded until the cap is smaller than the height of the slope beneath it - and the pale band near the summit is the harder layer that has kept this one standing.

Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
