A limestone tower

A limestone tower

A single weathered spire standing clear of the ridge around it, paler rock behind fading into distance and haze.

Towers like this form where the rock's vertical fractures erode faster than the surrounding mass, leaving an isolated column standing after everything around it has worn away. Give it long enough and the tower goes too; the scree at its foot is the tower's own future.

Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
