A guesthouse kitchen, Lamu

Coral rag left rough rather than plastered, carved wooden fish set into the wall under the stairs, and a woman blending something at the counter - an ordinary working corner of a guesthouse. The stone is the whole town: coral rag is dead reef, quarried from the shore, soft enough to cut with a saw when it comes out of the sea and hardening as it dries, and Lamu has been building with it for seven centuries.

Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
