A column in the karst

The Slovenian karst is where the word comes from - the Kras plateau, limestone dissolved by water over millions of years into a landscape that drains almost entirely underground.

The pillar is a stalagmite and a stalactite that grew until they met and joined. They put on something like a tenth of a millimetre a year, so this one has been forming for the whole span of recorded history, several times over.

Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
