A cleome field, Biei
Tarenaya hassleriana
Biei, Hokkaido · 23 August 2024

One band of the hillside given over to spider flower, white through pink to violet on what is a single variable species, planted thickly enough that the individual flowers dissolve into a haze. The name is the stamens: each flower holds six of them out on long threads well past the petals, like legs, and the seed pods that follow stand out on stalks the same way. A South American plant, and an old favourite in Japan for exactly this late-summer show.
Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
