A barn in the Finger Lakes

A gambrel-roofed dairy barn, long out of use, its siding gone silver-grey and half its windows broken out.
The gambrel roof - two slopes on each side rather than one - was the standard choice for exactly this kind of barn. The break in the pitch buys extra loft space for hay without adding a full storey of wall. Barns like this went up across upstate New York by the thousand in the early twentieth century, when the region still ran on dairy.
Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
