About

My appreciation for the natural world - how varied and beautiful it is - has grown a lot with the help of photography.

My focus is getting close to what's already around us: plants, insects and birds that are right below our noses or over our heads, though often easy to miss. Much of what's here is from our "back yard" in Brooklyn - Prospect Park, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Green-Wood Cemetery, along with some trips from further afield.

I built this site as a personal photography project, both to organize and showcase my photography and to share it with anyone who's interested. AI makes it possible to turn my photographs and notes into something more than a collection of images: a catalogue with identifications, notes, and the ability to zoom in close to see the detail. It's useful to me as a way of keeping track of what I've photographed and revisiting it, and hopefully others will find things here that catch their interest too.

How the Site Works

Built with the help of Claude Code, and hosted for free on Cloudflare. Claude writes the captions from my notes and the photos and helps organize everything; I check and correct the identifications where needed.

Notes

After shooting with Fujifilm for almost 10 years, I switched to Sony which is now my main system. My camera is currently the A7R VI, which is excellent for extremely detailed macro and wildlife photography.

For those in NYC, I highly recommend the Linnean Society and the Brooklyn Bird Club - great organizations which run walks and trips in and around the city that are ideal ways to learn.

Birds, insects, plants and other wildlife, mostly from Brooklyn, with some from further afield.
